Biography

Russian-Swedish soprano Maria Matyazova is appreciated for her beautiful timbre and powerful dramatic stage presence.  She recently appeared at the Royal Swedish Opera as Tatyana (Eugen Onegin), Soprano (Les Noces), Brigitta (Iolantha), Prima Sorella Cercatrice (Suor Angelica), Barena (Jenufa), Schleppträgerin (Elektra). In Spring 2023 she is singing Chloe in Queen of Spades at the same stage. 

Maria took part in several world-premieres, among others role of Esther in Löftet by Mats Larsson Gothe, Saturday in Tristessa by J.Bohlin both for Royal Swedish Opera, Stasi in Näsflöjten by F.Österling for Vadstena Festival and Piteå Kammaropera, Operapantomim for Folkoperan.

Other roles include Desdemona (Opera at Steninge Castle), Micaela (Skånska Operan, Valdemarsviksoperan), Iolanta (Royal Academy Opera), Countessa, Gilda (St Petersburg Chamber opera), Pamina (Grail theatre), Fedra (Folkoperan), First Flowermaiden (London Wagner Society). She started her career at the Mariinsky Theater in St Petersburg, where she sang Page in Lohengrin alongside Gösta Winbergh and under the baton of Valery Gergiev.

Maria is a very passionate and sought-after concert singer. Her repertoire contains songs by Debussy, Alfven, Stenhammar, Mussorgsky, Rahmaninov, Tchaikovsky, R.Strauss as well as Argento, Szymanowski and Ravel. She sang in concerts and recitals at the Swedish Royal Opera, Stockholm Concert Hall, Stockholm Globe, Berwaldhallen, Wigmore Hall, St Petersburg State Capella, St Petersburg Composer House, Ekaterinburg Philharmonic Hall, Omsk Philharmonic Hall etc. Maria also regularly performs in concerts for elderly and disabled people in collaboration with Stockholm Cultural Committee. She made a brilliant opening of Royal Swedish Opera’s digital platform operanplay.se in March 2020 featuring songs by Rachmaninov, Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky. Year 2022 she appeared in different concerts around Sweden singing Ukrainian songs.

Maria got her education at the Royal Academy of Music in London, University College of Opera in Stockholm and University of the Humanities and Social Sciences in St Petersburg. She took part in masterclasses at the Mozarteum, Georg Solti Accademia di Belcanto, Samling Institute for Young Artists studying with musicians like Leo Nucci, Barbara Bonney, Marjana Lipovcek, Sir Thomas Allen, Yvonne Kenny and Malcolm Martineau. She is a recipient of prestigious scholarships among others Anders Wall Foundation, Swedish Art Grant, Royal Swedish Opera Soloists Foundation.
